TEACHING PHILOSOPHY (Randy Bennett Ed.D.)
The numbered handouts in bold are at the end or in maxfulfillment.kinsta.cloud/teachphil/
One of my main teaching goals is student satisfaction. Students in my courses have a memorable, rewarding, worthwhile learning experience. See 1 Testimonials.
A degree program and its courses are not an end, but a means. They are not the first order of business, students are. What are their vision, purpose, goals for work and life, and how can their graduate program and courses help to fulfill them. See 2 Courses First Order of Business: YOU.
Another main goal is that students become “scholar practitioners”. In my courses, they are taught to be strong, sound in both theory and practice. My assignments focus on being theory, research evidence based supporting/backing up what’s written or said using different sources or perspectives in the correct APA style. Students are held to a high standard of quality graduate level papers that are like a journal article.
At the same time, students also learn the very real, practical, important work life reasons for being theory, research, evidence based, and knowing, understanding a literature, a body of knowledge. That it’s not some “ivory tower”, removed from reality thing.
For me, it’s not teaching, but a learning, facilitating learning philosophy. It centers around the question of what is the most powerful, effective learning, and how is that attained, applied, reinforced, practiced. Here some of the ingredients for answering and fulfilling that question.
Learning needs to be a lasting change in behavior (overt and covert) that gains desired results/ outcomes. At the same time, it also needs assessing in order to know if, what learning has taken place and how it can be strengthened or improved. See 3 2nd Nature Learning Program Development and Delivery for how the two come together, side by side in program planning.
I also utilize Optimal Learning – Professional Development and Improvement (OL-PDI) for powerful, effective learning. It is how we naturally, optimally learn, develop and improve a hobby, skill, expertise or profession. It harnesses and fully utilizes our amazing, natural learning power and potential, rather than wasting or squandering it. See 4 OL-PDI Overview.
New learning after a training, course or workshop needs to be supported, reinforced, practiced until it becomes a lasting part of behavior or performance. See 5 New Learning Support and Application Checklist.
Learning needs to be facilitated in the most powerful, effective ways as well. I put together a quick reference for ones I like or use the most. See 6 Effective Facilitation Tools and Strategies.
A “One Stop” Learning and Resource Center is needed for maximizing learning and development, and having what’s needed when it’s needed at the click of a mouse or touch of a smartphone. See 7 “One Stop” Learning and Resource Center and its over 35 tools, programs and resources that are like a gourmet menu, ‘feast of learning’ or learning organization.
